The Galiano Island Local Trust Committee asked staff for further reporting on groundwater resources and alternatives for a phased approach to development in the Crystal Mountain rezoning application. The motion carried at the committee’s May 2 meeting.[1]
At the meeting, residents raised concerns about the groundwater report and called for a new water study; the minutes record those comments as town-hall input.[1]
In discussion, the committee recorded that a 2015 groundwater assessment had one error: well records were mislabelled in an appendix, but the error did not create cascading errors throughout the report. The minutes also record staff’s comments that available data did not show saltwater intrusion into the Central Well and that its pump-test water sample was below the drinking-water standard for chloride.[1]
The minutes say the North Trincomali Channel groundwater region was classified as critical for groundwater availability because privately managed wells near the proposed development could be affected by well-to-well interference. They also record that the project’s actual water demand remained uncertain.[1]
