The proposed development permit area would protect groundwater recharge by protecting vegetation in critical areas, planner Narissa Chadwick told a July 26 community information meeting on Galiano. Staff had identified three options based on lot boundaries, and the Local Trust Committee’s next step was to decide on boundaries.[1]

The options covered areas of 2, 5, 10 and 20 hectares. Chadwick said the proposed bylaw would identify boundaries on a map and include exemptions, with examples including a hydrologist’s report, repairs and maintenance, and removal of dangerous trees.[1]

William Shuba, senior freshwater specialist, said the presentation focused on groundwater recharge. The minutes describe recharge mapping based largely on watersheds and note that forests and plants help filter water into the ground.[1]

A member of the public asked whether climate change had been considered. Shuba said the development permit area related to climate change, and Chadwick said the science would change and that more protection was needed, according to the minutes.[1]

The meeting minutes say public comment was invited through September 9 and that materials presented were available on the Islands Trust Galiano webpage.[1]
