Galiano rezoning proposal discussed at community meeting

The Galiano Local Trust Committee heard a presentation on the Crystal Mountain rezoning application at a community information meeting on September 24, 2022, where staff said the committee would consider a public hearing before third reading.^[1]

The proposed amendments to Bylaws 256 and 257 would designate 6.14 hectares for spiritual education in the Official Community Plan, subject to approval by the Minister of Municipal Affairs, and designate 18.4 hectares as nature protection for transfer to the Islands Trust Conservancy.^[1]

The minutes say a Section 219 covenant is in place for the land in perpetuity.^[1]

Speakers for the site said use would be limited to 30 people, with four scheduled special events each year allowing up to 60 people on those days.^[1]

During questions, the minutes record that zoning would not permit commercial tourism and that the 12-hour well test would be reviewed by the Ministry of Forests and Lands, which would decide whether it was sufficient.^[1]

The minutes also record that a meditation hut on skids should not have been built, and that the applicant said three huts should not have been built and apologized.^[1]
