Galiano committee approves amended Scoones variance permit
The permit covers three parts of the application, while the bylaw-enforcement file remains open.

The Galiano Island Local Trust Committee approved issuance of development variance permit GL-DVP-2023.5 (Scoones), as amended, at its April 9 meeting; Trustee Lisa Gauvreau opposed the motion.[1]
Before approving the permit, the committee voted to amend it to include only sections 2a)i, 2b)i and 2d)iv.[1]
Island Planner Kim Stockdill said the application addressed most of a court order, but not some retaining walls, and that approval would not close the bylaw-enforcement file; the current or a future owner would remain responsible for bringing the property into compliance.[1]
The applicant told the committee that the estate was required to sell the property and said removing the retaining walls could damage the septic field.[2]
The minutes record that committee members discussed the septic field, the rock wall and the options available if the permit were denied before voting on the amended application.[1]
