Galiano review to examine rules for associated islands
The project will consider possible land-use bylaw amendments after residents raised concerns about solar panels, stairs, docks and other structures.

The Galiano Island Local Trust Committee’s Associated Islands Regulation Review will examine current land-use regulations and may lead to amendments to the Land Use Bylaw. Island Planner Kim Stockdill said the project includes referrals to the Advisory Planning Commission, community information meetings, First Nations engagement and engagement with property owners on associated islands and boat-access-only properties. The current setback to the natural boundary of the sea is 7.5 metres (25 feet), and the regulation allows no exemptions, according to the meeting presentation. The current interior side-lot-line setback is 6 metres (20 feet) in the Small Lot Residential and Rural Residential zones. [1]
Residents said Wise Island relies on docks and attached access structures for emergency evacuation and rapid response to fires. They also said the island is not powered by BC Hydro, has small narrow lots and requires solar panels to be placed for optimum effectiveness. [1]
The minutes record that residents supported considering access stairs within the natural boundary on a case-by-case basis, provided there is a less formal process than a variance application. Residents also said they wanted assurances that current infrastructure could remain in place and not be subject to bylaw enforcement. [1]
Stockdill said the information gathered at the meeting would be presented to the Local Trust Committee as potential recommendations to amend the land-use bylaws. [2]
